Current Lot Set 5 Chairs Queen Anne/Chippendale Wormley CHAIRS - Set of five chairs, figured mahogany Queen Anne/Chippendale transitional set of four side chairs and one arm chair. The finest design, made for plantation owner Ralph Wormley, one of the founders of William & Mary College, of 'Rosegill' Plantation, Middelsex County, VA. Yoke form, leaf and scroll carved crest rail, shaped and carved splat. Shaped, carved and flared arms ending with a full mane, open-mouth stylized lion head. Splayed round back legs joined by a turned stretcher. Molded edge balloon seat with nicely shaped and carved arm supports, shaped apron. Front legs have floral and leaf carved knees ending on a ball and claw foot, floral needlepoint seat. Arm chair - 40 1/2" high, 25" wide, 20" deep, refinished, replaced back splat, left arm missing section of wood, repair to R leg, missing 7 toes, 2 back returns on front legs missing, 4 plugged screw holes in front, internal braces added. Side chairs - 44" high, 27" wide, 5" deep, #1 missing front L return, R front and back return, 1 toe on L front. #2 missing R top curl on back splat, blocks added, L front and back return and back return of R leg missing, 5 toes missing. #3 missing L top scroll, chip on yoke, missing L front return, return on front and back of R leg, 5 toes missing. #4 missing R scroll on crest rail, old repairs to top of splat, blocks added, missing L back return, R front and back returns, 2 talons on R foot missing, apron has filled screw holes. All retain 70% of original surface patina.
