Description
History Of Dentistry In the 1800, the legal requirement to start a dental school was to have a library and museum in place. As far as documentation can show, The Weaver Dental Museum of Temple University in North Philadelphia has the oldest conventional dental chair that is a converted wincer chair from the 1700. About Our Dental Chair Without a manufacturer name stamped on our dental chair, we can deduct four things. (1) Possibly, it was constructed before the traditional dental chair start. Dentistry’s crude beginning certainly started before the converted wincer chair came into existence. Surly before manufactures developed dental chairs commercially, people still had their teeth yanked out by someone interested in the necessity of the service--a gruesome picture, even in the wincer chair. (2) Possibly, this is a portable dental chair thrown in the back of a horse drawn wagon to make house calls in the old west and was constructed by the coffin maker. Personally, I really do not think this is what is going on. My thoughts are, even though the chair is in two halves that you can take apart, I don't think it was made to be portable. I think it simply turned out this way as a result of getting the chair to tilt backwards. (3) Markings on one of the boards seem to be from some type of milling in its construction. Therefore, an appraiser of historical furniture, wood, should be able to deduct a point in time. (4) Last but not least, we are sure you will not find another one of these anywhere. The Museums that we contacted have never seen one before, and the curator of the Weaver Dental Museum offered to look into its history, and never got back to us. Even after a follow up e-mail inquiring to weather or not she had found anything out. Original contact was 07/ 01/ 2008 follow up contact was 07/ 23/ 08/ Maybe the wincer chair is not so special after all. Not being able to afford an appraiser, we were waiting for an answer from them before we attempted to post our dental chair for sale. Where the backrest of the chair affixes to the board that has the milling marks, you can see through a seam crack that the craftsmen left his wood chiseling’s needed to do that in the chair back rest. The two front legs that were added for show have been broken off. The break was clean in respect to when I loosely pushed them back in place for these pictures, it is not very noticeable. If they were seriously wedged back and glued into position, the break would be barely noticeable. A perfect result will not be hard to accomplish by any handy person. The chair leans back to three separate levels, and weather it is in its most upright position or completely leaned back, the seat still remains level. A very simplistic but ingenious invention this dental chair is. The wooden bar that leans the chair back up and down by fitting into slots, you can see a white mark behind the third slot. This is a chip in the wood. With the above said, we have to ascertain that this dental chair would date back to at least the 1800s, or well before. Moreover, if this is not the oldest dental chair, it most likely is the only one of its kind.
